According to the 2018 Snack Foods Packaging and Processing Market Assessment and Trends study done by PMMI, the biggest association for packaging and processing technologies in the world and of which Maxpack Machinery’s is a member of, in 2016 the global snack market was a $280 billion dollar market with trends that vary per region.

At a global scale, the top 3 consumer trends listed were a demand for Better-For-You offerings, Single Serve products and Re-Sealable packaging.

On the other hand, the top 3 retail trends were Shelf-Ready packaging, Stand-Up pouches and Lower Case counts.

And finally, the top 3 influential trends are Better-For-You offerings, Explosion of SKU’s(more options), Flexible Packaging. In case you were wondering, eCommerce falls in the top 4 influential trends according to the study.

The snacks market share per region was distributed in the following way: EU(Europe) 45%, NA(North America) 33%, APAC(Asia-Pacific) 12%, Latam(Latin America) 8% and MEA(Middle Eastern-Africa) 2%.

Even though Latam represents an 8% of the global snack market, it is the region with the highest growth rate with an over 8% growth rate vs the global growth rate which is estimated to be between 3 and 4%. A highlighted growth segment for Latam was the Crackers & Rice Cakes savory segment which grew 21% from 2017 to 2018. According to a study done by Nielsen, in 2017 this high growth rate can be attributed to the growth in demand for healthy options, and a consumer preference towards local and hyperlocal options vs global brands.

This growth opportunity increases the need to stay on top with global trends in order to compete against bigger global players with flat but significant market share in the region. Attacking top consumer trends, retail trends and influential trends should be top in the list of priorities of snack companies.
